What Can You Expect During an Eye Exam?
Eye exams at Hometown Vision are personalized for your unique needs and designed to help you see well and comfortably. Here’s what you can typically expect during your visit:
- A discussion about any vision concerns and health history
- A comprehensive check of your visual acuity and how your eyes work together
- An in-depth evaluation of your eye health using diagnostic technology
- A walkthrough of all results to help you better understand your visual health and any recommendations
According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, adults should ideally have their eyes checked every 1–2 years, depending on their age, risks, and vision needs.
Book AppointmentUsing Diagnostic Technology for Preventive Eye Care
Protecting your vision for your whole life is our priority, which is why retinal scans and other key screening technology are part of our comprehensive eye exams. These noninvasive tests take just a few minutes, but they allow us to understand important details about your vision and make more accurate diagnoses.
Many eye diseases and conditions develop quietly, without obvious symptoms, and by having a regular eye exam, we can keep tabs on any changes and take action as soon as possible.
Optos Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging
Optos imaging technology captures detailed, panoramic views of your retina. In just a few moments, we can acquire a precise image of 80% or more of your retina—far more than traditional methods alone.
This retinal imaging allows us to uncover potential concerns, like retinal tears or signs of eye diseases, even before symptoms arise.
OCT Retinal Scans
OCT (optical coherence tomography) scans allow us to see detailed, cross-sectional images of your retina to detect early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other conditions before they impact your vision.
OCT is a bit like ultrasound, but uses infrared light instead of sound waves to create images of your retina.
Humphrey Visual Field Test
With the visual field test, we can evaluate your peripheral (side) vision and detect conditions like glaucoma or potential neurological issues (such as a tumour or stroke) affecting your vision.
Non-Contact Tonometry
We use non-contact tonometry to measure your eye pressure quickly. This test helps us detect early signs of glaucoma and monitor your eye health over time. NCT uses a puff of air, with no physical contact or drops required, making it a safe and easy part of your regular eye exam.
Common Eye Conditions We Screen For
Dry Eye Disease
That sore, gritty feeling in your eyes? It might be dry eye disease. Many don’t realize that dry eye is a treatable condition, and we’re here to help.
Dry eye disease is caused by an imbalance in your tears, and living in central Alberta’s often dry, chilly climate can make it even worse.
If you’ve been experiencing dryness, irritation, redness, watery eyes, or a gritty sensation, you may have dry eye disease.
We offer:
- Dry eye diagnosis
- Prescription and specialized eye drops
- Soothing at-home eye masks
- Supplements to support tear quality
By identifying the root cause of your dry eyes, we can create a treatment plan to help you find relief.
Digital Eye Strain
The reality of life today is that we all spend many hours on digital screens, and it can leave our eyes feeling fatigued or strained. It can even lead to an aching neck, sore shoulders, and headaches.
Known as digital eye strain, this issue is increasingly common for both adults and kids in today’s screen-heavy world.
Here are some ways we can help:
- Computer glasses: Do you need to tilt your head to read your computer screen? These personalized progressive lenses, made for the distance of your computer setup, can make a significant difference, especially for our patients who are 50+.
- Anti-fatigue lenses: These specialized lenses use lower prescription powers than computer glasses and often very work well for patients under 50, including those who don’t normally wear glasses, but who find their eyes exhausted after long days on screens.
- Blue light filter: Many patients find blue light filters help reduce the glare and strain from screens, and it’s an economical lens coating to add to your glasses.
- Follow the 20/20/20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, take a screen break to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This little rest for your eyes can pay big dividends by the end of the day.
- Personalized recommendations based on your life and your vision needs.
No matter what your day-to-day looks like, we can personalize a solution to protect your eyes and help keep them feeling refreshed.
Presbyopia
Around your mid-40s, it’s natural to notice reading and close-up work getting a bit trickier. This is often due to presbyopia, a normal condition where the lens in your eye becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus up close.
While presbyopia is unavoidable, progressive lenses can make life much easier by providing clear vision at all distances. Don’t worry! Presbyopia happens to everyone, and we’re here to help you choose the perfect eyewear to keep your vision performing for you.
