Signs You Might Have an Eye Disease

The reality is, many eye diseases and conditions can irreversibly damage your eyes without causing any symptoms you’ll notice. That’s why we so strongly recommend annual eye exams with retinal imaging for seniors, people with diabetes, and anyone with an elevated risk of eye disease.

Plan to see us any time you notice changes to your vision, including these possible signs of something more serious:

  • Sudden increase in floaters or flashes of light
  • Worsening night vision
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Faded colours
  • Change in peripheral vision

Early Detection Through Diagnostic Technology

We believe in using the right diagnostic tools to protect your vision. In-depth retinal imaging is simply an indispensable tool for your vision care, so it’s a standard part of our eye exams.

Our diagnostic technologies allow us to detect eye diseases early, often before easily noticeable symptoms arise. Here’s what we use to help stay ahead of any changes in your vision.

Optos Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging

Our Optos imaging system offers a panoramic view, capturing over 80% of your retina in just 1 scan. This technology helps us spot conditions like retinal tears or early signs of eye diseases, giving us a chance to protect your vision before problems develop.

With OCT (optical coherence tomography) scans, we generate detailed, cross-sectional images of your retina. This noninvasive technology is crucial for early detection of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other retina-related conditions, allowing us to act before your vision is affected.

Humphrey Visual Field Test

Your peripheral vision is key to daily life, from driving to simply moving through the world. The visual field test evaluates your side vision, helping us identify signs of glaucoma or even neurological issues like tumours or strokes that could impact your sight.

Forget the old puff-of-air test! Our iCare tonometry system measures your eye pressure quickly and comfortably, making it easier to assess your risk of developing glaucoma.

Common Eye Diseases We Can Detect & Manage

Detecting and managing eye diseases early is key to protecting your vision and overall eye health. Our compassionate team combines expertise with personalized care, aiming to make you feel supported every step of the way.

If we detect an eye condition or disease, we’ll work with you to create a plan, addressing your unique needs and adapting as necessary to help manage any changes. If needed, we can coordinate advanced treatments in Red Deer, Edmonton, or Calgary.

Your well-being is always our top priority.

Diabetic Eye Disease & Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes can impact the tiny, delicate blood vessels in your retina. Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage these delicate vessels, resulting in leakage or abnormal growth of new vessels. Regular monitoring through retinal imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows us to detect these changes early and prevent the worsening of conditions like diabetic retinopathy.

With timely intervention and proper blood sugar management, we can address any complications and help preserve your vision for the long term.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Often called the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma can develop without apparent symptoms. Early detection of optic nerve damage is key to managing this condition and protecting your vision.

Regular eye exams with diagnostic OCT imaging, visual field testing, and tonometry (eye pressure testing) allow us to monitor your eye health closely so we can adapt to changes fast.

Cataracts aren’t actually an eye disease. Rather, they’re a natural part of aging where the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, obscuring vision.

We can help you adjust to early-stage cataracts with an updated prescription and other vision aids. Eventually, cataract surgery is often the best step to help you see clearly and get back to your normal life. We’ll co-manage your cataract surgery and be there with you the whole way.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD affects the macula, the central part of your retina responsible for sharp vision. When this disease advances, it can make it difficult to drive, recognize faces, read, and do other essential daily activities.

Our ultra-widefield retinal imaging and OCT scans provide detailed insights to detect and manage this condition before it significantly affects your daily life.

Keratoconus is a progressive condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge, leading to distorted vision.

Early diagnosis of keratoconus can be life-changing, as it allows us to take action to preserve your vision. We co-manage corneal cross-linking for our patients with keratoconus and can fit scleral lenses for improved vision clarity.

Dry eyes aren’t only highly uncomfortable—they can impact the clarity of your vision and your overall eye health. We focus on identifying the root cause of your dry eye symptoms and providing personalized treatment options to help you find longer-lasting relief.

Understanding Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Do you or a member of your family have pink eye? We accept same-day and walk-in appointments!

Many adults assume all forms of conjunctivitis are bacterial infections that require antibiotics, but that’s not always the case. Viral pink eye typically heals on its own, while some cases of what looks like pink eye may be caused by allergies, dry eye, or even irritants like make-up or chemicals.

But we don’t expect you to figure out what kind of conjunctivitis you or your child have all on your own! We’ll determine the likely cause and provide the right guidance to get your eyes back to normal. Give us a call and we’ll fit you in as soon as possible to help you get relief.

Your Partner in Eye Health

We’re more than just eye care providers—we’re your neighbours, and we’re passionate about helping your vision last a lifetime. Don’t wait for symptoms to arise. Many eye diseases develop without warning signs, making regular eye exams essential for early detection and peace of mind.

Take the first step today.  Request an eye exam or walk right in for an appointment.
